The Arsenal Foundation Ambassador and Arsenal legend, Robert Pires visited Bal Raksha Bharat’s ‘Ride to School’ programme in Mumbai which supports vulnerable street and slum children. Pires learnt about and appreciated our project to get the most deprived children of Mumbai into the fold of education. Children had a fun time interacting with him and it was topped by a football match in which both girls and boys participated. Our Child Champion Shobha said, “As a girl I never had an opportunity to play football. Bal Raksha Bharat gave me this opportunity to play football with a legendary player. No matter whether we are girls or boys, we have the right to play and participate.”
Bal Raksha Bharat works in 10 slums on the outskirts of the Deonar garbage dump – the biggest land filling site in Mumbai where the mountains of rubbish are 20 meters high. In the last two years, our Mobile Learning Centre in the area has reached more than 1900 children and has helped more than 380 children access formal school education.
