Kavita’s golden journey: the power of good nutrition
In the classrooms of Government Middle School, Janakpur, in Madhya Pradesh, 8th-grade student Kavita Yadav was known for her curiosity and determination. Yet, like many children her age, her everyday food choices often included packaged snacks, sugary treats, and processed foods. She had little understanding of how these choices could influence her energy, concentration, and overall well-being.
A new chapter in her life began with the Eat Right School initiative, implemented in collaboration with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), LT Foods and Bal Raksha Bharat (BRB).
Through interactive sessions and the Science of Food activities, Kavita began to understand that making healthy food choices is an important part of staying active and healthy. She learnt how to read nutrition labels, identify ingredients and make informed choices about the foods she consumed. Using the Yellow Book curriculum, she explored the nutritional value of different foods and discovered the benefits of including fibre-rich traditional grains such as millets (Mota Anaj), along with fresh and seasonal foods, in her daily diet.
Kavita’s growing interest in nutrition soon led her to take on a new role as a Health Ambassador. She began sharing what she had learnt with her classmates and, importantly, took the message home.
With her mother’s support, Kavita started encouraging healthier food choices in her household. Packaged snacks became less frequent, while fresh vegetables, traditional grains and other nutritious foods became a more regular part of the family’s meals. What began as a school-based learning experience gradually became a positive change in her everyday behaviour.
As Kavita adopted healthier eating habits, she noticed that she felt more energetic and better able to participate in her daily activities and sports. Her growing confidence and stamina supported her aspirations as a young sportsperson.
Her determination eventually took her to a State-Level Competition, where she won a gold medal—an achievement that brought immense pride to her family and school community. For Kavita, the experience reinforced an important lesson: understanding nutrition can help children make choices that support their health, well-being and aspirations.
Today, Kavita is not only a young achiever but also a supporter of healthier choices among her peers and family.
Her story shows that when children are given the knowledge and confidence to make informed food choices, healthy behaviour can begin at school and create a positive ripple effect at home and in the wider community.
