The campaign, Street Child Cricket World Cup, uses the power of cricket to raise awareness and tackle the widespread stigma that street children face. It aims to inspire countries, governments, and communities to protect, respect, and support street-children, worldwide.
Ahead of the ICC World Cup, street-connected children from across the Commonwealth countries came together in the UK for their own international cricket tournament. On a global platform for street children, 10 gender-equal national teams from 9 Commonwealth countries played a historic tournament at Lord’s – the Mecca of Cricket and signalled to the world- #IAMSOMEBODY
In 2023, the 2nd edition of the SCCWC will take place in India before the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in Chennai and New Delhi.
Our Approach & Impact
Collaboration with HOPE Foundation
Bal Raksha Bharat India and HOPE Foundation brought together ‘Team India North’, which consisted of street children from the slums in urban Kolkata and those living in shelter homes, either away or abandoned by their families.
Shortlisting & Preparation
The eight finalists were selected out of a pool of 30 children from programmes across Kolkata, who had no formal cricket training. These children represent an invisible population and many of them did not have legal documents.
Involvement of Noted Influencers
Through the course of the campaign, we engaged several influencers and partners to amplify the agenda of street-connected children to raise awareness, raise the profile, and inspire public action. Indian cricketer and the captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, Mithali Raj alongside Former Cricket Captain of India, Saurav Ganguly were named the Goodwill Ambassadors of Team India at the Street Child Cricket World Cup. They joined in support to gear the team up for the final match at Lords.
Negotiations with Government Offices & Legal Representatives
Most of the finalists didn’t have a birth certificate and no legal identity. To get a passport and a visa took us several rounds of negotiations with government offices and legal representatives.
We have achieved considerable success ever since we embarked on the Street Child Cricket World Cup journey
- Collaboration with #PeppaPlaysCricket The much-loved cartoon characters Peppa Pig and George visited India, during the summer of 2019 for their cricket campaign #PeppaPlaysCricket. We collaborated and reached a wider audience through their media and social media presence, which is how the Street Child Cricket World Cup become a major component of all their external outreach. With immense support, Peppa and George welcomed Team India North at 2 major milestones for their campaign.
- Collaboration with Rajasthan Royals Street Child Cricket World Cup central partner, Rajasthan Royals invited Team India-North players to Jaipur to visit their practice session ahead of their match against Chennai Super Kings to guide and coach the team at the famous Sawai Mansingh Stadium. The team tutored the children on some basic techniques and tips that could be used at Lords.
