In the midst of severe flooding in #Assam, a quiet but powerful act of resilience took place on the 80th Independence Day, at Bamunpukhuri, Nazira, Sivasagar—we inaugurated the Child Friendly Space (CFS) at the local school.

For children living through the uncertainty of floods, a school can become more than a place of learning. It can become a place of safety, belonging and hope. The Child Friendly Space was inaugurated by District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) Sivasagar, Dr. Bikash Ranjan Konwar, in the presence of school teachers, social workers, labour union representatives, AATSA representatives, tea garden management and community members. Their coming together demonstrated something powerful: protecting children during a crisis is a shared responsibility.

The CFS will provide children with a safe and supportive environment where they can play, learn, express themselves, receive psychosocial support and reconnect with a sense of normalcy while their families and communities navigate the impact of the floods.

What made the moment even more meaningful was the participation of children and community members as they came together to mark the spirit of India’s 80th Independence Day.

For these children, resilience is not an abstract idea. It is being able to smile, play, learn and celebrate—even when the waters around them and continued sporadic rainfall have changed their everyday lives.

The inauguration is thus more than the opening of a safe space for the flood-affected children. It is a commitment which we could weave together with the community and stakeholders at large.
A commitment from the administration, community, school, frontline workers and local stakeholders that children will not be left behind in a disaster.

And this is where collective action matters. With the right support, a school can become a protective space; a community can become a safety net; and a crisis response can become an opportunity to restore dignity, hope and childhood.

Today, Bamunpukhuri gave us a powerful reminder- floods can take away homes and disrupt routines—but together, we can ensure they do not take away a child’s sense of safety, hope and possibility.
